If you’ve driven through downtown Pickens, you’ve likely passed this stone monument without realizing the story it represents.
Standing in Legacy Square, this monument honors General Andrew Pickens, the Revolutionary War hero for whom both the City of Pickens and Pickens County were named. Andrew Pickens was one of the most important military leaders on the Southern frontier during the American Revolution and played a key role in helping secure American independence in the Carolinas.

Born in 1739, Pickens became known as a skilled frontiersman, military commander, and statesman. He fought in numerous Revolutionary War battles and was promoted to Brigadier General. His leadership during the Southern Campaign, including his contributions surrounding the victory at the Battle of Cowpens, helped turn the tide of the war in the South. For his bravery and service, he became one of the most respected figures in early South Carolina history.
After the war, Pickens continued serving the young nation. He helped negotiate treaties with Native American tribes, served in the South Carolina legislature, and later represented South Carolina in the United States Congress. His influence was so significant that counties in South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama, along with the City of Pickens itself, were named in his honor.
The monument shown here serves as a reminder that the downtown Pickens crossroads are connected to a much larger story—one that stretches back to the days when the Upstate was still a rugged frontier. Thousands of residents pass this spot every year, often unaware that the man it honors helped shape both South Carolina and the United States during its earliest years.
Today, General Andrew Pickens rests at the historic Old Stone Church near Clemson, but his legacy remains woven throughout the Upstate. From Pickens County to Fort Pickens in Florida, his name continues to mark places tied to the story of America’s founding.
Have you ever stopped to read the plaques on this monument, or is it one of those landmarks you’ve driven by hundreds of times without knowing its history?
