Many people know the Swamp Rabbit Trail as a place to walk, run, or ride a bicycle, but spending a few hours on the trail quickly reveals that it is much more than that. Stretching approximately 28 miles between Greenville, Travelers Rest, and beyond, the trail has become one of South Carolina’s most successful outdoor recreation projects, attracting millions of visitors each year.
On a recent ride through Travelers Rest and Greenville County, I discovered historic railroad artifacts, shaded forest corridors, unique public art, and one of the newest additions to the trail system: Rad Rabbit 2.

A Trail Built on Railroad History
Long before cyclists and runners filled the corridor, trains traveled this route carrying passengers, freight, and agricultural products throughout the Upstate.
Evidence of that railroad heritage can still be seen today. Along the trail, visitors can find preserved locomotives, maintenance equipment, and railcars that serve as reminders of the days when the railroad connected small towns across the region.
The trail itself follows portions of the former Greenville & Northern Railway corridor, transforming a piece of transportation history into one of the Upstate’s greatest recreational assets.

Travelers Rest: The Trail Town
One of the most recognizable stops along the route is the colorful Travelers Rest mural.
The mural celebrates the town’s history, culture, and connection to the mountains while welcoming visitors arriving by bike or on foot. It has become one of the most photographed spots along the trail.
Travelers Rest has embraced its identity as a trail town. Restaurants, coffee shops, breweries, and local businesses line the route, making it easy to spend an entire day exploring.

A Green Tunnel Through the Upstate
One of the most enjoyable aspects of the Swamp Rabbit Trail is the variety of scenery.
In some places, the trail runs through downtown areas bustling with activity. In others, it feels like a secluded forest path.
Several sections pass through old railroad cuts where steep wooded embankments rise on both sides of the pavement. Large trees create a natural canopy overhead, providing welcome shade during South Carolina summers.
Crossing bridges over creeks and streams offers some of the most peaceful views along the route. It is easy to forget that busy roads and neighborhoods are often just a short distance away.

Furman University and Trail Amenities
Near Furman University, trail users encounter modern amenities that make long rides more enjoyable.
Water bottle filling stations, rest areas, public art, and easy access to campus create one of the most popular sections of the entire trail.
For cyclists tackling longer rides, these stations provide a convenient place to refill water before continuing toward Travelers Rest or downtown Greenville.

Discovering Rad Rabbit 2
One of the newest and most exciting additions to the corridor is Rad Rabbit 2.
Located near Sans Souci, this mountain bike trail branches off from the paved Swamp Rabbit Trail and offers riders a completely different experience.
The trail was designed specifically for bicycles and features:
- Dirt riding surfaces
- Rolling terrain
- Small jumps and rollers
- Berms and turns
- Fun technical features
- One-way bike traffic
The section shown in these photos includes a series of rollers that allow riders to build momentum without pedaling. Experienced riders can pump through the features for speed, while beginners can simply roll over them and enjoy the ride.
What makes Rad Rabbit 2 unique is that it provides a taste of mountain biking without requiring a trip deep into the mountains. Riders can enjoy a paved trail ride and then jump onto a purpose-built dirt trail for a completely different experience.

How Long Is the Swamp Rabbit Trail?
The full Swamp Rabbit Trail system now extends approximately 28 miles, making it possible to create rides ranging from a short family outing to an all-day cycling adventure.
Some popular distances include:
Short Family Ride
- 2 to 5 miles
- Perfect for young children
- Mostly flat terrain
Casual Ride
- 8 to 15 miles
- Ideal for most recreational cyclists
- Plenty of places to stop and explore
Long Distance Ride
- 20 to 30+ miles
- Excellent endurance workout
- Multiple trail towns and attractions along the route
Because much of the trail follows former railroad grades, elevation changes are generally gentle, making it accessible to riders of varying skill levels.

Why the Swamp Rabbit Trail Continues to Grow
The Swamp Rabbit Trail has become far more than a recreational path.
It connects communities. It preserves local railroad history. It supports local businesses. It provides safe transportation alternatives. And now, with additions like Rad Rabbit 2, it offers new opportunities for adventure.
Whether you’re looking for a leisurely family walk, a long-distance bike ride, a glimpse into Upstate railroad history, or a chance to try a mountain bike trail filled with rollers and features, the Swamp Rabbit Trail offers something for nearly everyone.
And the best part? Every mile seems to reveal something new.
