In the heart of downtown Travelers Rest, just steps from the Swamp Rabbit Trail, stands a church that has witnessed more than 130 years of local history. Today, visitors passing by may notice something unusual: two sanctuaries standing side by side. One is a simple white chapel dating back to the 1890s, while the other is a larger brick sanctuary built to serve a growing congregation. Together, they tell the story of both a church and a town that grew together over generations.
Travelers Rest United Methodist Church was established in 1893, making it one of the oldest active congregations in downtown Travelers Rest. The original white-frame sanctuary was completed shortly afterward and remains standing today, carefully preserved as a reminder of the church’s beginnings. As the congregation expanded, a larger sanctuary was constructed in 1987, creating the unique scene visible today where the old and new stand side by side.

The church’s location is fitting. Travelers Rest itself grew as a stopping point for travelers heading into the Blue Ridge Mountains. Long before interstate highways, wagon roads passed through the area, and weary travelers would stop here before beginning the difficult climb into the mountains. Over time, a small crossroads community developed into the thriving town we know today.
Today, the church refers to itself as “The Church on the Trail,” a nod to its location directly along the Swamp Rabbit Trail. Cyclists, runners, hikers, and visitors pass by daily, connecting the church to a new generation of travelers exploring the Upstate.
What makes the property especially meaningful is the contrast between the two sanctuaries. The white chapel reflects a time when Travelers Rest was little more than a rural mountain community. The brick sanctuary and soaring steeple reflect the town’s transformation into one of South Carolina’s fastest-growing communities. Rather than replacing the old building, church leaders chose to preserve it, allowing both structures to remain as a visible timeline of local history.

The congregation remains active today with two Sunday worship services held at 8:45 AM and 11:00 AM. The church is located at 19 South Main Street, Travelers Rest, SC 29690, just a short walk from downtown restaurants, shops, and the Swamp Rabbit Trail.
Over the years, countless weddings, funerals, baptisms, Christmas services, and Easter celebrations have taken place on this property. Generations of Travelers Rest families have walked through its doors. While the surrounding town has changed dramatically, the church continues to serve as a familiar landmark and gathering place.
Standing in the parking lot at sunset, it’s easy to appreciate what these two buildings represent. One sanctuary honors the past. The other serves the present. Together, they remind us that while communities grow and change, some foundations remain strong for generations.
