There are plenty of well-known places to enjoy Lake Hartwell around Clemson, but Mountain View Park is one of those places you can easily live near for years without ever realizing what is hiding there. Tucked away at the end of Mountain View Lane, the park sits on a wooded peninsula extending into Lake Hartwell.

The name fits. No big entrance announces a beach, no boardwalk lines it with visitors, and no developed waterfront is packed with amenities. Instead, you follow a quiet wooded trail until the trees begin to open and Lake Hartwell appears below. Depending on the lake level, stretches of exposed sand and red clay create a surprisingly beach-like shoreline.

Mountain View Park

Mountain View Park is located at 340 Mountain View Lane in Clemson. The City of Clemson describes the park as a natural recreation area on Lake Hartwell, and it is considerably larger than it first appears. Clemson planning documents place the park at about 34 acres, occupying a wooded peninsula that projects into the lake.

Admission to the park is free, and current city information lists the park hours as 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. The park is also dog-friendly, making it a nice option for anyone looking for a quiet place to walk the trails or spend some time near the lake with their dog.

What makes Mountain View unusual is how little development you see once you move away from the parking area. Much of the park remains wooded, which gives it a completely different atmosphere from Clemson’s more developed recreation areas.

Finding the Park

Walking away from the parking area, the trail quickly enters the woods. It is mostly a natural dirt path rather than a paved walking trail. Through the trees, there are several places where you can reach the Lake Hartwell shoreline.

That is part of what makes the place feel hidden. Someone could easily drive into Mountain View Park, see the boat ramp or disc golf course, and never realize there is a quiet shoreline farther into the property.

The beach’s appearance also changes with Lake Hartwell’s water level. When the lake is lower, significantly more of the sandy and red-clay shoreline becomes exposed. In some places, the exposed shoreline is surprisingly wide and gives the area a much more beach-like appearance.

In some places, benches overlook the water, making it a good spot to sit for a while and enjoy the lake.

A Quiet Place to Walk or Run

Mountain View Park is also a surprisingly good place to walk or run. During our visit, several people were using the wooded trails for exercise, and the park remained peaceful even with other visitors around.

The city lists about a mile of walking trails, but you are not necessarily limited to one simple loop. Because the 20-hole disc golf course spreads through different parts of the property, there are additional paths and connections that make it possible to take different routes and vary your distance.

That makes the park especially useful for people who do not want to walk or run the exact same route every time. You can stay on the main trail for a shorter outing or work your way through different sections of the disc golf area to add distance.

The trails are mostly natural dirt paths beneath a shady tree canopy. Some sections run deeper into the woods while others bring you close to Lake Hartwell. The terrain is not especially difficult, but roots, loose soil, and uneven ground make it feel more like a true trail than a paved greenway.

What really stands out is how quiet the park feels. Even though people were walking, running, playing disc golf, and using the boat launch, it never felt particularly busy. For anyone looking for an easy wooded run or a peaceful walk near Clemson, Mountain View Park is an easy-to-overlook spot.

A 20-Hole Disc Golf Course

One of Mountain View Park’s biggest recreational features is its 20-hole disc golf course.

The course is spread throughout the wooded property rather than concentrated in one open field. Fairways move through different parts of the forest, and the natural terrain adds variety.

The course also helps create the network of paths throughout the park. Even visitors who are not playing disc golf will notice routes branching in different directions as they move through the woods.

For disc golfers, the wooded setting makes the course more interesting than a wide-open park course. Trees, changing terrain, and narrow fairways all add to the challenge.

Boat Launch and Lake Access

Mountain View Park also provides direct access to Lake Hartwell through a public boat launch.

The launch makes the park useful for more than hiking, running, and disc golf. During our visit, trucks and trailers were in the parking area, and boats were using the surrounding part of the lake.

Because this is an active boating area, the shoreline is best described simply as lake access rather than a protected swimming beach. There are no ropes or barriers separating the shoreline from boat traffic.

Still, having direct access to Lake Hartwell is one of the things that makes Mountain View Park such a useful little recreation area.

Parking

Mountain View Park has a paved parking area near the boat launch with room for regular vehicles as well as trucks and boat trailers.

The lot is larger than you might expect considering how tucked away the park feels. On our visit, several vehicles were parked there, but the area still did not feel crowded.

That makes access fairly simple. You can park, head straight toward the trails, walk toward the shoreline, play disc golf, or use the boat launch without having to deal with a large recreation complex.

Picnic Tables and Quiet Lake Views

Scattered picnic tables provide another reason to stay awhile. Bring lunch, walk or run the trails, play a round of disc golf, or simply find a place overlooking Lake Hartwell.

Mountain View does not have the polished feel of a large recreation complex, and that is probably one of its biggest advantages. It feels more like a preserved patch of woods with lake access.

That combination makes it useful for a surprising number of activities without making the park feel crowded or overly developed.

Why So Many People Miss It

Mountain View Park sits at the end of a residential road rather than along one of Clemson’s busiest routes. There are no towering entrance signs and relatively little to suggest from the road that a sizable lakefront park is waiting at the end.

Even people who know about the boat launch or disc golf course may never walk far enough into the property to discover the shoreline.

It just feels like one.
