Sweet Dreams Scare House in Easley

For people around Pickens, Pumpkintown, Liberty, Easley, and Clemson, Sweet Dreams deserves a spot near the top of the list because of its location.

Sweet Dreams Scare House is at 250 Saco Lowell Road in Easley and combines indoor and outdoor sections into a roughly quarter-mile haunted experience. The attraction estimates that the complete walkthrough lasts approximately 35 to 40 minutes.

For 2026, the season begins September 18. It operates Friday and Saturday nights through November 7, along with October 29 and November 1. November 6 and 7 are special Blackout Nights. Regular operating hours are 8 to 11 p.m.

General admission is $30. Children age 10 and younger are $20, and a Fast Pass costs an additional $10. Parking is free.

Sweet Dreams also offers something that sets it apart from many other local attractions: a Rated R tour. For $35, guests age 17 and older can sign a waiver allowing a much more intense experience involving physical contact and explicit language. The regular $30 tour does not include physical contact.

That makes Sweet Dreams particularly useful for groups with different tolerance levels. You can choose a conventional haunted-house experience or intentionally make the night considerably more intense.

Location: 250 Saco Lowell Road, Easley, SC 29640
2026 opening date: September 18
Hours: 8-11 p.m.
General admission: $30

Nightmare Dungeon in Greenville

Nightmare Dungeon is at 645 Old Anderson Road in Greenville, near the Powdersville side of the city. It is one of the longest-running haunted attractions in the area and operates inside and around an old farmhouse property rather than a temporary Halloween setup.

The 2026 season begins September 11 and continues through November 1, followed by additional nights November 6-7 and November 13-14.

One of Nightmare Dungeon’s biggest advantages is its schedule. Unlike many haunts that operate only Friday and Saturday, Nightmare Dungeon opens most days during the main Halloween season. Weeknight scares continue until approximately 11 p.m., while Friday and Saturday nights run until midnight.

Adult admission is $30.

There is also an optional hands-on experience. For an additional $2, guests can purchase a glow necklace indicating that they consent to actors touching and grabbing them. If that is not your idea of fun, simply choose the regular no-touch experience.

The attraction has also expanded for 2026 with a new Wicked Warehouse section, adding another large indoor area to the existing farmhouse and other structures.

Location: 645 Old Anderson Road, Greenville, SC 29611
2026 season: September 11-November 1, plus November 6-7 and 13-14
Hours: Weeknights until about 11 p.m.; Friday-Saturday until midnight
Adult admission: $30
Hands-on upgrade: $2

Best for: Teens and adults wanting an intense traditional haunt

The Sunken Manor

The Sunken Manor may be one of the most unusual haunted attractions in the Upstate because you do more than walk through rooms waiting for actors to jump out.

Located at The Underground Farm at 2185A Keeler Mill Road in Greenville, not far from Travelers Rest, The Sunken Manor combines a haunted-house walkthrough with interactive challenges and escape-room elements.

Guests move through the story, solve puzzles, complete tasks, interact with characters, and may find themselves being chased through parts of the attraction. That makes it particularly appealing to people who have already visited conventional haunted houses and want something different.

The 2026 season begins September 18. Scheduled nights include September 18-19 and 25-26; October 2-3, 9-10, 16-18, 22-25, and 29-31. Opening and closing times vary, generally beginning between 7 and 7:30 p.m. and ending between 10 and 11 p.m.

Current admission is around $35, depending on ticket selection and date.

Madworld Haunted Attractions

Madworld is the big-night-out option on this list.

Located at 147 Country Manor Road in Piedmont, Madworld combines a self-guided haunted house and trail with an entertainment area containing additional activities. The main haunt stretches more than half a mile and includes numerous themed environments.

General admission for 2026 is $42. A Fastpass is $75, while a $100 Scream All Night Pass provides unlimited front-of-line trips through the attraction for one night.

Families should know about Madworld’s unusual No-Scare Medallion. General admission with the medallion costs $52, or you can add a medallion for $10. It signals actors not to target that particular guest, even though everyone else in the group remains fair game.

Children age 10 and younger pay $37 for regular admission or $47 with the child version of the No-Scare Medallion.

Madworld also has an 18-hole Ghost Town Mini Golf course, axe throwing, a virtual-reality zombie shoot, carnival games, food, roaming characters, photo opportunities, and other activities. Those extras use separate activity tickets unless included in a package.

Location: 147 Country Manor Road, Piedmont, SC 29673
General admission: $42
Children 10 and under: $37
General admission + No-Scare Medallion: $52
Fastpass: $75
Scream All Night Pass: $100
Parking: Regular parking is free; VIP parking is $30
Main haunt time: Roughly 30-40 minutes, not including the line
Best for: Groups wanting an entire evening rather than one walkthrough

If you are going close to Halloween, expect lines to become considerably longer.

Nightmare Hollow in Spartanburg

Nightmare Hollow is at 3411 Reidville Road in Spartanburg and is primarily an outdoor haunted trail along the Tyger River.

Friday admission is $25, Saturday is $30, and Sunday is $20.

The trail takes approximately 30 minutes and includes multiple themed sections, actors, darkness, loud noises, tight spaces, and some gore. Because it is outdoors, wear shoes appropriate for uneven ground rather than dressing as though you are going to an indoor attraction.

The Haunted Farm in Hendersonville

The Haunted Farm is across the state line at 624 Townsend Road in Hendersonville, North Carolina, but it is close enough to the Upstate to deserve inclusion.

This is another substantial attraction rather than a quick haunted-house walkthrough. The experience combines outdoor trails with indoor environments, themed rooms, actors, darkness, fog, strobe effects, and other scare elements.

On regular nights, operating hours are 7 to 10:30 p.m. General admission starts around $40 and Fast Pass admission around $65.

On the busiest nights, the attraction operates from 7 p.m. until midnight. On those nights, general admission starts around $45, while Fast Pass admission is about $70.

This one would pair particularly well with a daytime trip to Hendersonville or Flat Rock before the scares begin.

Want Ghosts Without a Haunted House?

Some of the most interesting Halloween events around the Upstate are not haunted houses at all.

If actors, gore, and jump scares are not your thing, consider one of the area’s historical ghost tours instead.

Ghosts of Ashtabula

Historic Ashtabula near Pendleton is offering ghost tours on October 9, 10, 16, 17, 23, and 30 in 2026.

Tours begin at 8 p.m. and cost $30 per person. Guests must be at least 16 years old.

This is a completely different experience from a commercial haunted house. Instead of manufactured sets, the tour takes place at an actual historic Upstate property and combines Ashtabula’s history with the ghost stories that have developed around it.

Location: Ashtabula Historic House near Pendleton
2026 dates: October 9, 10, 16, 17, 23 & 30
Time: 8 p.m.
Admission: $30
Age: 16+
Best for: Local history and paranormal fans

Greenville Paranormal Walking Tour

Downtown Greenville also has guided paranormal walking tours.

The Downtown Paranormal Walking Tour starts near Falls Park at the Rose Crystal Tower in Pedrick’s Garden, around 55 University Street. Tours generally begin at 8 p.m., cover less than two miles, and last about two hours.

Tickets are approximately $27.

Unlike a haunted house, nobody is waiting behind a wall to jump at you. The experience focuses on Greenville’s paranormal stories and reported activity as you walk through the downtown locations connected to them.

Meeting area: 55 University Street, Greenville
Time: 8 p.m. on scheduled nights
Price: About $27
Length: About two hours
Walking: Less than two miles
Best for: Date nights, history fans, and people interested in paranormal stories

Spooky Spartanburg Ghost Tour

Spartanburg has a similar experience downtown.

The Spooky Spartanburg Ghost Tour is a roughly 90-minute walking tour covering local legends and paranormal stories connected with places such as Magnolia Street Cemetery, Converse University, Morgan Square, and other downtown locations.

The tour meets at the fountain beside the Magnolia Street Parking Garage near One Morgan Square. Tickets are approximately $25-$27 per person depending on the booking source.

Special 2026 Halloween-season dates include October 30 and November 6.

Meeting point: Fountain beside Magnolia Street Parking Garage, Spartanburg
Halloween-season dates: October 30 & November 6
Price: Approximately $25-$27
Length: About 90 minutes
Best for: People wanting spooky stories without haunted-house intensity

Visit an Upstate Place With a Haunted Reputation

You can also explore Upstate folklore without buying a Halloween ticket.

Stumphouse Tunnel near Walhalla has accumulated ghost stories over the years, but the real history behind the unfinished railroad tunnel is fascinating enough without needing to prove anything paranormal. The tunnel, Issaqueena Falls, the failed Blue Ridge Railroad, and the lost community of Tunnel Hill make this one of Oconee County’s best history stops.

Poinsett Bridge in northern Greenville County has an even stronger haunted reputation. Stories involving strange lights, unexplained sounds, shadowy figures, screams, and other unusual experiences have circulated for years.

Those stories are folklore rather than established historical facts, but understanding how those legends became attached to real historic places is part of what makes them interesting.

Explore them during normal public-access hours and treat them as historic sites rather than unofficial nighttime paranormal attractions.

Which Haunted Attraction Is Closest to Pickens and Pumpkintown?

For readers starting around Pickens and Pumpkintown, Sweet Dreams in Easley is one of the most convenient major haunted attractions. Nightmare Dungeon is another relatively close option as you head toward Powdersville and Greenville.

Heading north toward Greenville and Travelers Rest gives you The Sunken Manor, while going farther south and east opens up Madworld and Hopkins.

The Spartanburg and Blacksburg attractions require a longer drive, but Fear Farm and Booger Jim’s Hollow give you multiple attractions for one admission, which may make the extra distance worthwhile if you are trying to make an entire night of it.

If you are already planning a fall day in Western North Carolina, The Haunted Farm in Hendersonville becomes an easy addition after dark.

Make Halloween Weekend an Entire Fall Day

Halloween falls on a Saturday in 2026, which makes this an unusually good year for combining daytime fall activities with a haunted attraction at night.

Our 2026 fall-color forecast has the period around Halloween among the dates worth watching for strong color around Pumpkintown and Table Rock. Weather ultimately determines when peak color arrives, but it makes it possible to start Halloween with mountain scenery and end it with a haunted house.

Spend the morning around Table Rock, drive Highway 11 in the afternoon, visit a pumpkin patch or corn maze, grab dinner, and then head toward Easley or Greenville after dark.

If you are heading toward Oconee County, spend the afternoon around Stumphouse Tunnel and Issaqueena Falls before a Ghosts of Ashtabula tour.

If you are going toward Hendersonville, visit an apple orchard or explore Flat Rock during daylight before heading to The Haunted Farm that evening.

Halloween does not have to begin when the sun goes down.

Before You Go

Haunted attractions change much faster than ordinary tourist attractions. Weather can close outdoor trails, tickets can sell out, prices may increase on peak nights, and Halloween-week schedules sometimes differ from normal October hours.

Buy tickets in advance when possible, particularly for Friday and Saturday nights close to Halloween. Wear closed-toe shoes for outdoor attractions, check whether parking costs extra, and review touch policies before buying your ticket.

Most importantly, do not assume that “family friendly” means an attraction will not scare a child. Darkness, loud noises, gore, fog, strobe lights, confined spaces, and actors getting extremely close can be overwhelming even when physical contact is prohibited.

Check the attraction’s current information before leaving home.

Then pick your poison.
