Get ready for a great day outside
The best family adventure is one your whole group can comfortably enjoy.
These are the questions parents ask most before an Upstate outing. Open any section for the short answer, then use the Adventure Finder to pick a place that fits.
How do I match a trail to my child?
Age is only a starting point. Think about experience, terrain, heat, weather and the least experienced person in your group. A quarter mile of rocky natural trail can be harder than two miles of paved greenway. Plan a turnaround point, and remember there is no requirement to finish a trail.
How do I know there will be a bathroom?
Check facilities at the exact entrance you plan to use. Some large parks have restrooms in one building but not near a remote trailhead, and some close seasonally. In our guides, unknown means unverified, not available. The finder's Confirmed available filter only shows places where restrooms are confirmed.
What should we pack?
Drinking water for everyone, comfortable shoes with grip, weather layers, snacks, sun protection, a small first-aid kit and a charged phone for emergencies. Add diapers, wipes and extra clothes for little ones. Paper mission sheets work when cell service fails.
How do we stay safe around waterfalls?
View moving water from established paths and viewpoints. Wet rock slabs and steep drops are the biggest hazards, and many waterfall injuries happen on rocks near the top. Never cross closure signs, never enter water during a posted advisory, and keep children within arm's reach near the edge.
What about bikes, traffic and roadside parking?
Rail trails like the Doodle Trail and Swamp Rabbit Trail are shared with cyclists. Teach children to stay to the right and stop at crossings. At roadside waterfalls, use official pull-offs and hold hands from the car to the trail.
What about heat and storms?
Summer afternoons are hot and often stormy. Start early, choose shade or water play, and head back to the car at the first thunder. Mountain overlooks are cooler and windier than town.
What is a good first adventure?
Choose a short destination near home, pick one highlight, bring a snack and end while everyone still wants to come back. Success is a family that wants to go again.
