Bald Rock has long been one of the most popular scenic overlooks in the Upstate. For decades, visitors simply parked along Highway 276 and walked a short distance to one of the best panoramic views in the Mountain Bridge Wilderness. That experience has recently changed.

Following the closure of the original roadside parking area, visitors are now directed to a newly constructed parking lot off Persimmon Ridge Road. While the new lot is spacious and appears to be a significant improvement from a safety standpoint, our recent visit revealed several issues that first-time visitors should be aware of before making the trip.

June 2026 Visitor Update

During our visit, the original Bald Rock parking area remained closed.

Following the posted detour, we reached the new parking area off Persimmon Ridge Road. The parking area itself is excellent. It is large and newly constructed, featuring an informational kiosk about Bald Rock and nearby heritage preserves.

Unfortunately, getting there and finding the overlook proved much more difficult than expected.

The Access Road

The alternate route required driving a gravel road that appeared to have received little recent maintenance.

One section was especially rough, with deep ruts and uneven terrain that would likely concern anyone driving a passenger car. Although we made it through, we would recommend vehicles with higher ground clearance until road conditions improve.

If you’re driving a low-clearance sedan, use caution, particularly after periods of rain.

The New Parking Area

Once we reached the new lot, we were impressed.

The parking area is:

  • Large
  • Easy to maneuver
  • Recently constructed
  • Equipped with an informational kiosk
  • Much safer than parking alongside Highway 276

It appears designed to accommodate a much larger number of visitors than the previous roadside parking.

The Biggest Problem: Finding the Trail

This is where our visit became frustrating.

After parking, we expected to find an obvious trail leading to Bald Rock.

Instead, we found:

  • No clearly marked trailhead
  • No directional signs point toward the overlook
  • No visible footpath leaving the parking lot
  • No map showing where to begin walking

We walked around the parking area and explored the surrounding woods, but were unable to locate a clearly marked trail to the overlook.

If an official trail exists from this parking area, it was not obvious during our visit.

For first-time visitors, the lack of wayfinding makes the experience unnecessarily confusing.

Nearby Heritage Preserves

The information kiosk also highlights several nearby preserves managed by SCDNR.

Ashmore Heritage Preserve

Ashmore contains portions of the Mountain Bridge Passage Trail and protects rare plants, wildlife habitat, and scenic sections of West Fork Creek.

Activities include:

  • Hiking
  • Wildlife viewing
  • Hunting (seasonally)

Eva Russell Chandler Heritage Preserve

Located nearby, Eva Russell Chandler Heritage Preserve protects rare plant communities and scenic granite outcrops while providing hiking opportunities into the Mountain Bridge Wilderness.

Bald Rock Heritage Preserve

The preserve itself protects unique granite outcrops and rare mountain plant communities.

According to SCDNR, Bald Rock is home to several uncommon species found only in specialized mountain habitats, making it an important conservation area and one of the Upstate’s best viewpoints.

Our Experience

Our goal was simple: park, enjoy the overlook, take photographs, and update this guide for our readers.

Instead, we spent much of our visit trying to determine where the trail actually began.

While the new parking lot is a welcome improvement, clearer directional signage would make a tremendous difference for first-time visitors.

Tips Before You Visit

  • Expect the original parking area to be closed.
  • Follow the signs to the new parking area.
  • Drive carefully on the gravel access road.
  • Allow extra time in case locating the trail proves difficult.
  • Bring a GPS app or an offline map.
  • Don’t assume the trailhead will be obvious.

Help Us Improve This Guide

Were you able to locate the trail from the new parking area?

If you’ve recently visited Bald Rock and found the route to the overlook, let us know. We’ll update this guide to help future visitors enjoy one of South Carolina’s most beautiful mountain destinations.

Final Thoughts

The new parking area is a major improvement for visitor safety and provides ample space for vehicles. However, our experience suggests that better trail signage and wayfinding are still needed.

We look forward to returning once additional signs are installed and updating this guide as conditions change.
