Motorists traveling along Dacusville Highway (SC-135) near the intersection of Mt. Tabor Church Road in northern Pickens County reported spotting a large black bear at approximately 11:32 a.m. today.

The bear was observed moving near the wooded area along Dacusville Highway in the vicinity of 3520 Dacusville Highway, an area surrounded by forest, small farms, and natural wildlife habitat. Witnesses described the animal as a large adult black bear traveling near the edge of the woods before disappearing back into the tree line.

Black bear sightings are becoming increasingly common throughout the Pumpkintown, Dacusville, and Table Rock regions as South Carolina’s black bear population continues to expand. While most bears avoid people, wildlife officials recommend giving bears plenty of space and never attempting to approach, feed, or photograph them from close range.

Residents in the area are encouraged to:

  • Secure trash cans and outdoor pet food.
  • Keep bird feeders monitored, especially during summer months.
  • Watch pets when outdoors.
  • Slow down while driving through wooded stretches of road where wildlife may cross unexpectedly.

The sighting serves as a reminder that Pickens County remains one of South Carolina’s most wildlife-rich areas, with black bears regularly traveling between the mountains, river corridors, and forested foothills.
