When most people think about Table Rock State Park, they picture stunning mountain views, beautiful waterfalls, peaceful campgrounds, and some of South Carolina’s best hiking trails. What many visitors do not realize is that cell service can be limited throughout much of the park, especially on the upper portions of the Table Rock Trail, Pinnacle Mountain Trail, and other backcountry areas.
Whether you are hiking to the summit, camping for the weekend, or simply exploring the park for the day, it is a good idea to save this page to your phone before heading into the mountains.

What to Do If You’re Lost on the Table Rock Trail
Even experienced hikers can become disoriented, especially if weather conditions change or darkness approaches.
If you realize you are lost, remember the word STOP:
Stop
Do not continue wandering. Most lost hikers become farther disoriented by continuing to move without a clear plan.
Think
Consider the last trail marker, bridge, overlook, or intersection you remember passing.
Observe
Look for trail blazes, signs, footprints, streams, or other landmarks. Check any downloaded maps or GPS applications.
Plan
If you cannot confidently determine your location, stay where you are and contact 911 if service is available.
Search and rescue teams can locate a stationary hiker much more quickly than they can locate someone who continues moving through unfamiliar terrain.
Additional Safety Tips
- Stay on established trails.
- Do not attempt shortcuts down steep slopes.
- Conserve your phone battery.
- Carry a whistle.
- Use a flashlight or headlamp if darkness approaches.
- Stay with your group.
- Make yourself visible to rescuers.
