From mountain scenery and small-town charm to breweries, coffee shops, and family-friendly biking, the Ecusta Trail is quickly becoming one of the most enjoyable outdoor destinations within an easy drive of Pumpkintown.
Just over an hour from Pumpkintown, a piece of North Carolina history has found new life.
The Ecusta Trail follows the route of a historic railroad line that once carried passengers, freight, and paper products through Henderson County. Today, that former railroad corridor has been transformed into a beautiful paved trail connecting Hendersonville and Horse Shoe, creating one of the newest outdoor attractions in Western North Carolina.
After recently visiting the trail, it is easy to understand why so many people are talking about it.

From Railroad to Recreation Trail
The trail takes its name from the Ecusta Paper Mill, a major employer that once operated near Pisgah Forest. For decades, trains traveled this route carrying workers, goods, and materials through the mountains.
When railroad service eventually ended, the corridor sat largely unused. Rather than allowing the route to disappear, local leaders worked to preserve it and transform it into a community asset.
Today, visitors can walk, run, or bike along the same route that trains once traveled through Henderson County.
One advantage of using a former railroad corridor is that railroads were designed with gentle grades and gradual curves. As a result, the Ecusta Trail is mostly flat and easy for visitors of all ages to enjoy.
What Makes the Ecusta Trail Special?
Family-Friendly Riding
Unlike many mountain biking destinations in the region, the Ecusta Trail is accessible to nearly everyone.
The wide paved surface makes it ideal for:
- Families with children
- Casual cyclists
- Walkers and runners
- Strollers
- E-bikes
- Dog walkers
Whether you want to ride six miles or simply take a short evening walk, the trail offers a comfortable experience.
A Trail Connected to Local Businesses
One of the most unique aspects of the Ecusta Trail is how closely it connects to local communities.
Instead of riding through miles of uninterrupted forest, visitors regularly encounter restaurants, breweries, coffee shops, markets, and gathering places directly beside the trail.
Several businesses have embraced trail culture by creating outdoor seating, bike parking, and welcoming spaces for visitors.
Beautiful Mountain Scenery
As the trail leaves Hendersonville, the surroundings become increasingly rural.
Riders pass through wooded sections, creek crossings, open fields, and farmland while enjoying views of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains.
The peaceful atmosphere feels very different from the busier trails found in larger cities.

Highlights Along the Route
Hendersonville Trailhead
The eastern trailhead includes parking, restrooms, visitor information, and easy access to downtown Hendersonville.
For first-time visitors, this is the perfect place to begin.
Trailside Brewing
Located directly beside the trail, Trailside Brewing has become one of the most popular stops for cyclists and walkers.
Its outdoor gathering areas and trail access make it a natural destination for visitors looking to relax after a ride.
Ecusta Market & Café
This local favorite combines a café atmosphere with locally sourced products and fresh food, making it an excellent lunch stop along the route.
Horse Shoe
At the western end of the completed section, visitors will find a quieter, more rural atmosphere featuring farms, historic buildings, and small-town charm.
Bike Rentals Available
Visitors who do not own a bicycle can still enjoy the trail.
