Most travelers rushing between Cashiers and Franklin barely realize they are driving through one of the most beautiful stretches of road in the Southern Appalachians.

The 12-mile section of U.S. Highway 64 through the Cullasaja Gorge follows the river as it winds through dense mountain forests, towering rock walls, rushing whitewater, and several waterfalls that are visible right from the roadside.

On a recent drive from Cashiers to Franklin, the scenery was every bit as impressive as many of the more famous mountain roads in the region. Around nearly every curve, another view of the gorge appeared, with crystal-clear water tumbling over massive boulders beneath a canopy of rhododendron and hardwood forest.

What Makes the Drive Special

  • Steep mountain gorge scenery
  • Numerous roadside waterfalls
  • The wild and scenic Cullasaja River
  • Dense Nantahala National Forest
  • Frequent pull-offs and overlooks
  • Easy access from both Cashiers and Franklin
