There are some places in the South Carolina mountains that make you stop talking for a moment.

Wigington Overlook is one of them.

Perched high above Lake Jocassee along the Oscar Wigington Memorial Scenic Byway, this scenic pull-off offers one of the most breathtaking views in the Upstate. From the overlook, visitors can see the sparkling waters of Lake Jocassee stretching across the valleys below while layer after layer of Blue Ridge Mountains fades into the horizon. On a clear day, the view seems endless.

Many travelers drive right past without realizing what they’re missing.

Those who stop are rewarded with one of the finest roadside views in South Carolina.

More Than Just a Scenic Pull-Off

The overlook is named for Oscar Wigington, a former mayor of Salem and local tree farmer whose name was also given to the scenic byway that winds through this section of the Sumter National Forest. The overlook has become one of Oconee County’s most photographed locations and offers sweeping views of northeastern Oconee County, northwestern Pickens County, Lake Jocassee, and the surrounding mountains.

A memorial stone at the overlook commemorates the designation of the Oscar Wigington Memorial Highway in 1969.

The recently added photo frame overlooking Lake Jocassee has become a favorite stop for visitors looking to capture the perfect mountain photo.

The Hidden Trail Beside the Overlook

Most visitors never venture beyond the viewing area.

Just beside the overlook is a short, unofficial trail that descends into a shady mountain forest filled with rhododendron, mountain laurel, moss-covered boulders, and a small creek.

The path is not marked on official maps and should be considered an unofficial trail. While it is relatively short, it offers a completely different experience from the overlook above. Within minutes, visitors can find themselves surrounded by dense mountain vegetation and quiet forest scenery, all while remaining only a few hundred feet from the parking area.

The trail includes:

  • Rhododendron tunnels
  • Small creek crossings
  • Large granite boulders
  • Fern-covered forest floor
  • Peaceful woodland scenery

If you decide to explore, wear sturdy shoes and use caution, especially after rain.
