Towering approximately 150 feet, Rainbow Falls is one of South Carolina’s tallest waterfalls and offers an unforgettable combination of scenic river views, rugged mountain trails, towering cliffs, and refreshing mist.
While the hike isn’t the easiest in the Upstate, every step is rewarded with incredible scenery. Along the way, you’ll cross mountain streams, walk through old-growth forest, climb hand-carved stone steps, navigate massive boulders, and eventually arrive at a waterfall that feels much cooler than the surrounding forest thanks to its constant spray.

Where is Rainbow Falls?
Rainbow Falls is located inside Jones Gap State Park, part of the spectacular Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area in northern Greenville County.
Unlike many waterfalls that require only a short walk, Rainbow Falls is earned through a challenging mountain hike. Fortunately, the journey is just as memorable as the destination.
How to Get to Rainbow Falls
The hike begins at the Jones Gap Visitor Center.
From the parking area, you’ll begin on the blue-blazed Jones Gap Trail. This section follows the beautiful Middle Saluda River and provides a relatively gentle start to the hike.
The trail is well maintained and easy to follow. Blue trail blazes clearly mark the route, making navigation simple.
After roughly 2 miles, you’ll reach a clearly marked trail junction.
This is where you’ll leave the Jones Gap Trail and turn onto the red-blazed Rainbow Falls Trail.
From this point forward, the hike changes dramatically.
The Climb Begins
Once you step onto the Rainbow Falls Trail, the elevation starts to rise almost immediately.
The trail becomes considerably steeper as it climbs toward the waterfall through the mountainside.
You’ll encounter:
- Natural stone staircases
- Large granite boulders
- Exposed tree roots
- Narrow mountain paths
- Numerous switchbacks
- Rocky terrain requiring careful footing
Although the climb is challenging, the trail is extremely well marked with red blazes, so it’s difficult to lose your way.
Good hiking shoes are highly recommended because many sections consist of uneven rocks that become slick after rain.
Jones Gap Trail: Beautiful but Rocky
One thing that surprised me was just how rocky portions of the Jones Gap Trail are.
Many sections contain large rocks scattered across the trail, requiring hikers to carefully watch each step. It’s not technically difficult, but you’ll spend much of the hike navigating uneven terrain instead of walking on smooth dirt paths.
Fortunately, the trail is exceptionally scenic.
Towering hardwoods provide shade, mountain streams constantly flow nearby, and the peaceful sounds of rushing water accompany much of the hike.
Hand-Carved Stone Steps
One of the most unique features of this hike is the series of stone steps carved directly into solid rock.
Rather than installing wooden stairs, trail builders shaped the mountain itself into usable steps.
These natural-looking staircases blend seamlessly into the landscape and showcase the incredible craftsmanship required to maintain trails throughout Jones Gap State Park.
They’re also a reminder that you’re hiking through rugged mountain terrain rather than a manicured walking trail.
Beautiful Bridges and Mountain Streams
Early in the hike, you’ll cross several picturesque mountain streams.
Rustic wooden footbridges carry hikers across clear, flowing water while offering excellent photo opportunities.
These crossings are among the most peaceful parts of the hike and offer a welcome break before the steeper climb toward Rainbow Falls.
Massive Boulders Along the Trail
Another highlight is the enormous granite boulders scattered throughout the forest.
Some stand several stories tall, creating narrow passages where the trail winds between giant rock walls.
These impressive rock formations make the hike feel like an adventure long before reaching the waterfall.
The Final Approach
As you near Rainbow Falls, something interesting happens.
You’ll begin hearing the waterfall before you can actually see it.
The sound grows louder with every switchback until the forest suddenly opens to reveal one of South Carolina’s tallest waterfalls.
The view is absolutely worth the climb.
Rainbow Falls
Rainbow Falls drops approximately 150 feet down a massive rock cliff before cascading over several lower ledges.
The surrounding cliff is almost as impressive as the waterfall itself.
Layers of ancient rock create dramatic textures and colors that make the waterfall appear even larger.
Standing beneath the cliff gives you a true appreciation for just how massive the falls really are.
Why It’s Called Rainbow Falls
On sunny days, the waterfall often lives up to its name.
The fine mist from falling water regularly produces beautiful rainbows near the base of the falls.
During my visit, the rainbow was clearly visible, making an already spectacular scene even more memorable.
Because the rainbow depends on sunlight and the mist’s angle, every visit is a little different.
A Natural Air Conditioner
One thing photos can’t capture is how much cooler it feels near the waterfall.
Even on a warm summer day, the constant mist noticeably lowers the temperature around the base of Rainbow Falls.
After hiking uphill for several miles, stepping into the cool spray feels incredibly refreshing.
Many hikers spend quite a while relaxing here before beginning the return hike.
Great Place for a Picnic
Several large, flat rock ledges near the waterfall make excellent places to sit.
They’re perfect for:
- Eating lunch
- Enjoying a snack
- Taking photos
- Relaxing in the cool mist
- Listening to the sound of the waterfall
Just remember that these rocks can become slippery from the constant spray, so use caution when walking around them.
Trail Difficulty
Rainbow Falls is not a beginner hike, but it’s not an extreme mountain climb either.
The first portion along the Jones Gap Trail is fairly moderate.
The real challenge begins after turning onto the Rainbow Falls Trail.
With approximately 1,600 feet of elevation gain, you’ll steadily climb until reaching the falls.
Most hikers in reasonable physical condition can complete the hike, but expect to work for the reward.
