Many people know about the annual National Park Pass, but very few realize that free lifetime passes are available to veterans, people with disabilities, volunteers, and other groups.
I was honestly surprised to learn that, as a veteran, I qualified for a free Lifetime Military Pass.
If you’ve never looked into the America the Beautiful Pass program, it’s worth taking a few minutes to do so. It may be one of the best outdoor values in America.
What Is the America the Beautiful Pass?
The America the Beautiful Pass is an interagency pass accepted by six federal land management agencies, including:
- National Park Service
- U.S. Forest Service
- Bureau of Land Management
- U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service
- Bureau of Reclamation
- U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
The pass grants access to more than 2,000 federal recreation sites across the United States, including many places right here in the Southeast.
The Free Lifetime Military Pass
One of the biggest hidden benefits is the Lifetime Military Pass.
This pass is available at no cost to U.S. military veterans and Gold Star Family members. Current active-duty military members and their dependents are also eligible for military passes.
You can obtain one by showing qualifying identification at participating federal recreation sites or by ordering one online and paying only a small processing and shipping fee. Acceptable proof may include:
- Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC)
- Veteran Identification Card (VIC)
- Retired military ID
- State driver’s license with veteran designation
- Other qualifying military identification
The pass never expires.
Other America the Beautiful Passes
The military pass isn’t the only way to save money.
Annual Pass
Anyone can purchase the standard Annual Pass, which provides one-year access to participating federal recreation areas.
Perfect for families planning multiple trips each year.
Senior Pass
U.S. citizens and permanent residents age 62 and older qualify for:
- Annual Senior Pass
- Lifetime Senior Pass
Besides free entrance, these often include discounts on camping and certain recreation fees.
Access Pass
Individuals with permanent disabilities can receive a free lifetime Access Pass.
Like the Senior Pass, it may also provide discounts on camping and other amenities.
Every Kid Outdoors Pass
Fourth-grade students can receive a free annual pass through the Every Kid Outdoors program, allowing families to visit federal recreation sites together.
It’s one of the best family travel programs available.
Volunteer Pass
Love giving back?
Volunteers who complete 250 hours with participating federal agencies can earn a free annual Volunteer Pass.
Does It Work in the Pisgah National Forest?
Yes.
One of the biggest misconceptions is that these are only for national parks.
The pass is also accepted at many recreation areas managed by the U.S. Forest Service, including locations throughout Pisgah and Nantahala National Forests, where it covers standard amenity fees at participating sites.
That means your mountain adventures may become much more affordable.
Great Places Near Pumpkintown Where Your Pass May Be Useful
Within a short drive of Pumpkintown, your pass can be useful at recreation areas including:
- Whitewater Falls
- Looking Glass Falls
- Sliding Rock
- Cradle of Forestry
- Lake Powhatan Recreation Area
- Davidson River Recreation Area
- Numerous picnic areas and developed trailheads throughout Pisgah National Forest
Keep in mind that not every location charges an entrance fee, and the pass generally covers standard entrance or amenity fees, not campground reservations, cabin rentals, tours, or special permits.
Is the Great Smoky Mountains National Park Included?
Interestingly, Great Smoky Mountains National Park does not charge an entrance fee.
However, if you visit nearby developed recreation areas managed by participating federal agencies, your pass may still be useful. The park’s separate parking tag program is not replaced by the America the Beautiful Pass.
Is It Worth Getting?
Absolutely.
Even if you only visit a handful of federal recreation sites each year, the pass can quickly pay for itself.
For veterans, it’s even better.
A free lifetime pass means you can spend more time exploring the Blue Ridge Mountains, hiking waterfalls, photographing wildlife, and making memories with family without worrying about entrance fees.
Sometimes the best travel tips are the ones nobody tells you about.
