AVL is in Fletcher, south of Asheville, near Interstate 26. You do not need to travel into downtown Asheville to use it. The airport is undergoing a substantial terminal redevelopment, so a visit can include both new concourse space and temporary passenger routes. That makes current maps and a realistic arrival plan part of choosing AVL, rather than details to leave until flight day.

Where AVL fits for Upstate travelers
The northern foothills are a useful starting point for an AVL comparison, but town names alone do not establish your driving time. Someone near Table Rock may approach through different roads than a traveler leaving downtown Greenville or Spartanburg. Search from your actual address and compare the routes at the time of day you expect to travel.
For Clemson, Seneca, Anderson, or other starting points farther from the North Carolina border, include the additional ground journey before committing to a fare. That does not rule AVL out: a well-timed nonstop may still be worthwhile. It does mean that a small ticket saving deserves a closer look when paired with an early departure or a late-night return.

Use AVL’s current flight schedules to investigate a route, then confirm through the airline’s booking system. AVL’s September 2026 parking announcement introduced three products: Premium, Standard and Shuttle. Premium combines close-in surface spaces and garage parking; Standard is near the terminal with walking or shuttle access; Shuttle uses more distant lots. Select the product that fits your luggage, mobility, and schedule, then use the current parking map for its entrance.

AVL parking is credit-card only. Shuttle Lot C uses mobile payment, so follow the instructions posted for your chosen lot. The airport provides shuttle tracking through Passio GO!; this can help with the transfer, but it doesn’t guarantee how quickly a shuttle will reach you.
EV charging: make a backup plan
AVL’s parking page lists two Level 2 charging stations with J1772 connections and no charging fee, with parking charges still applying. Availability is first-come, first-served. Confirm the current location and access with parking staff before relying on it, and arrive with enough battery for the return or an alternate charging stop. A charger listed on a website does not reserve a space for your vehicle.

AVL Forward: new facilities, ongoing construction
AVL Forward is the airport’s approximately $400 million terminal redevelopment. The project timeline lists the North Concourse opening in June 2025, a partial baggage claim opening in April 2026, and a rental-car facility opening in May 2026. The new terminal is planned at about 335,000 square feet, with completion projected for late 2027 to early 2028.
That projected completion window does not mean every facility is already finished. Passenger journeys can include covered outdoor pathways and temporary routes. Read the current terminal and journey maps before traveling, then follow signs and staff instructions on arrival. Allow extra time for unfamiliar routes, rather than assuming a smaller airport always means a shorter walk.
Arrive two hours before boarding time
AVL’s current travel advice asks passengers to arrive at least two hours before scheduled boarding time. Boarding and departure are different points on the itinerary. Work backward from the airline’s boarding time and add the drive to the airport; do not subtract two hours from departure and treat that as the same plan.
For example, if a flight departs at 8 a.m. and the airline lists boarding at 7:25 a.m., the two-hour-before-boarding target is 5:25 a.m. at the airport. This is an illustration, not a flight schedule. Airline check-in, bag-drop, and gate deadlines still apply, and it may be wise to allow extra time if you need assistance or face difficult road conditions.
Planning the drive from Pumpkintown and the Upstate
Map both airports from your actual starting point, with a departure-time estimate for the day you expect to travel. For AVL, compare the practical routes through the foothills and toward the airport area rather than automatically routing through downtown Asheville. Mileage alone can hide the difference between a winding mountain road and a highway approach.
Check DriveNC and South Carolina 511 before leaving. Construction, a crash or mountain weather can change the drive, and an early flight may put the road journey in darkness. Choose a route that offers reliable access and matches your comfort level with the conditions, then save the sightseeing for another day.
Make a return plan as well. A late flight can put you on the road even later after baggage and a parking shuttle. If several people are traveling, decide who will drive. A fare saving is easier to enjoy when the trip home has been considered with the same care as the departure.
Pickup, rideshare and rental cars
AVL’s September 1, 2026 update places taxi and ride-app pickup in a designated lot south of the new rental-car center and baggage claim. The airport describes it as about a six-minute walk, with an AVL shuttle alternative from the terminal curb. Use the current map and app instructions; rideshare pickup differs from being dropped off at the terminal.
If a friend or family member is collecting you, use the airport’s complimentary cell-phone lot while waiting and stay with the vehicle. Coordinate pickup when you are ready rather than asking the driver to wait at the terminal curb. Check the latest roadway signs because parking entrances and traffic patterns have changed during redevelopment.
The new rental-car facility opened May 20, 2026, next to the new baggage claim. If flying into AVL for a foothills visit, confirm the rental company’s counter hours, vehicle availability, and late-arrival arrangements. Include the rental booking and the time needed to reach the counter in the arrival plan.
Families, mobility needs and the mountain view
AVL advises passengers who need wheelchair assistance to request it through their airline in advance. Ask about the full journey from check-in to gate and from arrival to ground transport. Construction routes, parking transfers and luggage can matter more to comfort than whether the airport is described as regional. Families can also check the map for restrooms before choosing where to wait.
A window seat can provide an enjoyable view of the mountain landscape when skies and flight paths cooperate.
