Sky Top Orchard feels more like a mountain destination.
Sitting high above Flat Rock, North Carolina, the orchard stretches across rolling hills with rows of apple trees, grassy lanes, family attractions, and views toward the Blue Ridge Mountains. Families come for U-Pick apples, but it is easy to spend several hours exploring the farm, grabbing fresh cider doughnuts, riding the hayride, visiting the animals, and simply enjoying the mountains.
For visitors coming from Upstate South Carolina, Sky Top is especially convenient. The orchard is about 45 minutes from Greenville and around 40 minutes from Asheville, making it close enough for an easy day trip while still feeling like a mountain getaway.
Our family has been visiting Sky Top for years, and looking back through the pictures is almost as much fun as the trip itself. We have photos of kids barely tall enough to reach the lowest branches, followed by visits years later with a whole new group of little apple pickers walking the same rows.
That is part of what makes Sky Top special. You can certainly come once to pick apples, but it is also the kind of place that easily becomes a fall tradition.

The final portion of the drive climbs toward the orchard, and once you arrive, the elevation becomes part of the experience. Depending on the weather, you may get clear mountain views or low clouds hanging across the surrounding ridges.
From much of Greenville, Travelers Rest, Pickens County, and the northern Upstate, Sky Top works well as either a half-day trip or part of a full day around Hendersonville and Flat Rock.
What Is Sky Top Orchard Like?
What sets Sky Top apart from many other orchards is its setting.
This is not a small roadside stand surrounded by a few rows of trees. The orchard spreads across a large mountain property, with apple trees covering rolling hills and long grassy lanes leading between different varieties.
Some areas are fairly level, while others involve noticeable hills and longer walks. Depending on what is ripe, you may have to walk farther into the orchard to reach the trees currently open for picking.
That is worth knowing if you are visiting with very young children or anyone who has trouble walking long distances.
The terrain’s benefit is the scenery. Some of the best views come from the higher parts of the orchard, where the rows open toward the surrounding mountains.
Apple Picking at Sky Top Orchard
Apple picking is still the main reason most people visit.
Sky Top grows more than 20 apple varieties, along with other seasonal fruits such as Asian pears, peaches, sour cherries, and grapes at different times of the year.
Not every variety is available at the same time.
Apple season generally begins in late summer and continues through the fall. Early varieties can start ripening in August, while some later-season apples may not be ready until October.
Weather also affects ripening dates, so the exact schedule can change from year to year.

When Different Apples Are Usually Ready
August is usually when some of the early apples begin appearing. Varieties may include Gala, Honeycrisp, Ginger Gold, McIntosh, and other early-season apples.
September usually brings a much wider selection. Depending on the year, visitors may find varieties such as Golden Delicious, Jonagold, Cortland, Mutsu, Fuji, and several others.
October is typically when many of the later varieties become available, including apples such as Granny Smith, Stayman Winesap, Pink Lady, Rome, Gold Rush, Arkansas Black, and others.
These are general ripening windows, not guarantees.
One year can look very different from another, especially after an unusually hot, wet, or dry growing season.
U-Pick Reservations
One important change visitors should know about is the timed U-Pick reservation system.
Sky Top now offers timed apple-picking reservations, which help control the number of people entering the picking areas and help guarantee access to available fruit.
A timed reservation includes a picking bag and can be shared by a small group.
Walk-up picking may still be available, but it depends on how much ripe fruit remains.
If picking apples is the main reason for your visit, reserving ahead of time is the safest option.
You don’t need a U-Pick reservation just to visit the orchard.
You can still enjoy the market, food areas, playground, and other attractions without going into the picking fields.
What to Know Before Entering the U-Pick Area
A few rules are especially important for families.
Strollers are not allowed inside the U-Pick fields.
Personal bags, purses, and backpacks may also be restricted in the picking area.
If you are visiting with a baby or toddler, a child carrier may be easier than depending on a stroller.
You should also expect uneven ground, grass, hills, and potentially muddy conditions after rain.
Closed-toe shoes are the best choice.

For younger children, this can easily become one of the longest stops of the day.
Animal Barn
Sky Top also has a farm animal area.
Visitors may see goats, sheep, chickens, rabbits, peacocks, and other animals.
Children can usually get fairly close to the animals, making this a good break after walking through the orchard.
Bamboo Forest
There is also a short walk through a bamboo area near the animal and gem-mining sections.
It is a small part of the orchard, but it is an interesting change from the apple rows and gives kids another place to explore.
Scenic Hayride
The hayride is a good option if you want to see more of the property without doing all the walking.
The tractor-pulled ride takes visitors around parts of the mountaintop farm.
It is especially nice after spending time carrying apples through the orchard.
The hayride costs only a few dollars per person, with very young children typically riding free.
A wheelchair-accessible option may also be available upon request.
Bee Train
Younger children will probably notice the Bee Train quickly.
Small bee-themed cars are pulled behind a tractor around the farm.
It is designed primarily for children, although adults may be able to ride depending on space.
Apple Cannon
The apple cannon is one of the more unusual activities at Sky Top.
Visitors can load apples into a cannon and launch them toward farm-themed targets across the orchard.
Older kids and teenagers may enjoy this one more than some of the smaller children’s attractions.
There is an additional charge to use the cannon.
Gem Mining
Sky Top also has a gem-mining attraction where kids can sift through material looking for stones.
Different bucket sizes are available at different prices.
For families with kids who like rocks and gemstones, this can easily add another half hour or more to the visit.
Photo Opportunities
Apple orchards naturally make great places for fall photos, and Sky Top has plenty of opportunities.
Some of the best pictures are not necessarily at designated photo areas.
The long grass lanes, mountain views, low apple branches, and rows of trees all make easy backdrops.
Sky Top also has some traditional photo stops families return to year after year.
Looking back through our own photos, some of the best ones are simply the kids walking through the orchard, reaching for apples, or exploring between the rows.

A Family Tradition
One of the things we enjoy most about Sky Top is how different the same place can feel as the years pass.
We have photos from older visits when some of the kids were tiny, followed by newer visits with different children now running through the same orchard lanes.
The trees are still there.
The mountain views are still there.
The cider doughnuts are still there.
The kids are just taller.
That is one reason places like Sky Top become traditions instead of one-time attractions.
History of Sky Top Orchard
Sky Top’s history goes back to the late 1960s.
The Butler family began developing the property into a commercial apple orchard after purchasing land in the Flat Rock area.
By the late 1960s, dozens of acres had been planted with apple trees.
The orchard originally supplied apples to supermarkets, but the business eventually shifted toward U-Pick.
Allowing customers to pick apples directly from the trees meant the fruit could stay on the tree longer and ripen more naturally, rather than being picked early enough to survive shipping.
Over time, the orchard became increasingly visitor-focused.
Picnic areas and family attractions were added, followed by hayrides, children’s activities, the apple cannon, and the food offerings that are now a major part of the Sky Top experience.
The orchard remains family-operated today.
When Is the Best Time to Visit?
There is no single perfect time because each part of the season has advantages.
August
August is a good choice if you want early-season apples, warmer weather, and greener scenery.
Honeycrisp and Gala are often among the popular early varieties.
Crowds may also be lighter than they are later in the fall.
September
September is probably the best overall month for many visitors.
There is usually a wider apple selection, the weather begins cooling down, and the orchard is fully into its fall season.
Crowds also begin increasing.
October
October brings the classic fall atmosphere.
The air is cooler, later-season apples are available, and fall color may begin appearing in the surrounding mountains.
It is also one of the busiest times of year.
Weekend traffic, food lines, and attraction lines can all be noticeably heavier.
If you can visit on a weekday, especially earlier in the day or during the afternoon, the experience may be much more relaxed.
How Long Should You Stay?
If you only want to buy apples and doughnuts, you could make it a fairly quick stop.
But that is probably not the best way to experience Sky Top.
For most families, two to four hours is a reasonable amount of time.
That gives you enough time to walk through the orchard, pick apples, grab food, visit the market, let the kids play, and add one or two attractions.
Families with younger children may spend even longer.
It is easy for a visit to turn into a half-day outing.
What Should You Wear?
Wear comfortable shoes.
That may be the most useful advice in this entire guide.
Sky Top is a working orchard on mountain terrain.
Expect grass, dirt, uneven ground, hills, and possibly mud.
Closed-toe shoes are ideal.
During fall, layers are also helpful because temperatures can change quickly in the mountains.
On some visits, you may start the morning in a sweatshirt and be comfortable in a T-shirt by afternoon.
A light rain jacket is also worth bringing if the forecast is questionable.
Visiting With Small Children
Sky Top is very family-friendly, but parents should plan for a few things.
The biggest issue is the stroller restriction in the U-Pick fields.
If you have a baby or toddler who cannot walk long distances, a child carrier may be useful.
The orchard also involves more walking than some first-time visitors expect.
Once you leave the U-Pick area, though, younger kids have plenty to do.
The playground, animals, Bee Train, hayride, bamboo forest, and gem mine all give families options if little ones lose interest in picking apples.
Can You Visit Without Picking Apples?
Yes.
You do not have to pick apples to enjoy Sky Top.
Visitors can still walk around the main areas, visit the market, buy food, see the animals, use the playground, and enjoy the attractions.
This is especially useful if U-Pick reservations are sold out.
You can still make the trip and buy pre-picked apples from the market.
Buying Pre-Picked Apples
Not everyone wants to walk through the orchard carrying a bag of apples.
Sky Top also sells pre-picked fruit.
The available varieties usually change throughout the season, just like the U-Pick selection.
This can be a good option for older visitors, anyone with mobility concerns, or families who want the orchard experience without spending much time picking.

How Crowded Does Sky Top Get?
Very crowded.
Especially on fall weekends.
Sky Top is one of the most popular orchards in the Hendersonville area, and September and October can draw large crowds.
If possible, visit on a weekday.
If you have to visit on a Saturday or Sunday during peak season, arriving early is usually the better option.
Earlier visits can mean easier parking, shorter food lines, less crowded picking areas, and better access to ripe fruit.
Parking
Parking is available at the orchard, but peak weekends can be busy.
Traffic tends to build as you approach the property during the busiest fall periods.
If you are visiting in October, allow extra travel time.
Arriving shortly after opening can make the experience easier.
Pets
Before bringing a dog or other pet, check Sky Top’s current pet policy.
Working farms often have restrictions because of food production areas, crowds, livestock, and health regulations.
Service animals are treated differently under applicable law.

In less than an hour from much of Greenville, you can go from suburban Upstate South Carolina to walking through apple trees with the Blue Ridge Mountains in the background.
It feels farther away than it really is.
That makes it particularly good for families who want a mountain day trip without committing to a long drive.

There are plenty of places around Hendersonville where you can buy apples.
There are also plenty of family attractions where kids can spend an afternoon.
Sky Top works because it brings those things together in one place.
You get the mountain setting.
You get the orchard.
You get apples straight from the tree.
The kids get room to explore.
Everyone gets cider doughnuts.
And somewhere along the way, you usually end up with a few pictures that become more valuable than whatever you brought home from the farm market.
Years later, those pictures are often the part you remember.
