Long before golfers arrived, this land was part of a Cherokee settlement and was later granted to Revolutionary War veteran Captain William Lynch for his military service. Over the next two centuries, the property passed through several notable local families before eventually becoming a golf course in the late twentieth century.
Today, the course sits on more than 100 acres of beautiful foothill terrain beneath Table Rock Mountain, offering stunning views in every direction.
A Course Built for the Mountains
Originally opened around 1980 and designed by renowned golf architect Russell Breeden, the course features 18 holes winding through rolling hills, mature forests, streams, and rocky outcroppings.
One of the most memorable spots on the course is the signature eighth hole, where golfers tee off overlooking a picturesque waterfall and mountain backdrop that has become one of the club’s most photographed views.

Reviving a Local Landmark
The course has undergone several name changes over the years, including Gauley Falls Country Club, The Rock at Jocassee, and Bear Valley Golf Club. In 2017, new ownership invested heavily in improvements, including renovated greens and a remodeled clubhouse, helping restore the property as a premier golf destination in Pickens County.

Located at 171 Sliding Rock Road in Pickens, The Rock is only a short drive from Pumpkintown, Table Rock State Park, and many of the area’s most popular outdoor attractions. Visitors can enjoy golf, mountain scenery, special events, and overnight accommodations.

Getting There from Pumpkintown
From the Pumpkintown crossroads, take Pumpkintown Highway (SC-8) toward Pickens, then follow local roads toward Sliding Rock Road. The drive takes approximately 15–20 minutes and passes through some of the most scenic countryside in northern Pickens County.
