Pumpkintown General Store & Café: A Taste of Old South Carolina
Long before the mountains around Table Rock became a destination for hikers and road trippers, the Pumpkintown General Store was already serving the local community.
Long before the mountains around Table Rock became a destination for hikers and road trippers, the Pumpkintown General Store was serving the people who called this community home.
Opened in 1938 as Pumpkintown Grocery Burgess & Son, the store stood at the crossroads of Pumpkintown Highway and Table Rock Road, providing groceries, fuel, and everyday necessities to local families. Historic photographs show Esso gas pumps out front and a large Coca-Cola sign mounted above the roofline, welcoming travelers making their way through the Blue Ridge foothills. For many residents, the store was more than a place to shop. It was where neighbors gathered, exchanged news, and stayed connected to the community.
Over the decades, the building has adapted to changing times while maintaining the character that made it a local landmark. What began as a traditional country store has evolved into a beloved café that continues to draw visitors from across the Upstate and beyond.
Today, the Pumpkintown General Store & Café is best known for hearty Southern cooking served in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. The café opens early and has become a favorite breakfast stop for locals, hikers, motorcyclists, and visitors exploring the mountains.
Popular menu items include:
🍔 Chili cheeseburgers
🥞 French toast and pancakes
🥔 Cheesy hash browns
🍳 Homemade biscuits
🥩 Hamburger steak with gravy
🍟 Curly fries
🍌 Homemade banana pudding
Part of what makes the experience special is its authenticity. This is not a themed restaurant trying to recreate the past. It is a place that has genuinely been part of the community for generations. The conversations around the tables, the familiar faces behind the counter, and the welcoming atmosphere all reflect the spirit of a traditional Southern country store.
While the café has seen renovations and expanded seating over the years, visitors will still find the same sense of hospitality that has defined the store since 1938. Whether you arrive in hiking boots after a morning on the trails or pull in for breakfast before a scenic drive through the mountains, the experience feels refreshingly unchanged from a simpler era.
