From Old Garden Tools to Yard Art: How to Make Whimsical Rake Characters

Turn old garden rakes into charming yard art with this simple DIY project. Learn how to build the Pumpkintown Pumpkin, Table Rock Hiker, and other creative garden characters using recycled…

If you have an old leaf rake gathering dust in the shed, do not throw it away just yet. With a little creativity, a few inexpensive materials, and an afternoon of work, you can transform a worn-out garden tool into a whimsical yard character that will have visitors stopping for photos and asking where you bought it.

These playful creations have become popular in gardens across the country, but they fit especially well here in Pumpkintown, where creativity, gardening, and outdoor living are all part of the local culture.

Recently, we created two themed characters inspired by the community: the Pumpkintown Pumpkin and the Table Rock Hiker.

Meet the Pumpkintown Pumpkin

The Pumpkintown Pumpkin celebrates everything that makes our community unique. Painted bright orange and decorated with a burlap bow and pumpkin accent, this cheerful character looks right at home among flowers, pumpkins, and fall decorations.

To build one, start with an orange-painted metal leaf rake. Large washers become the eyes, while a garden trowel serves as the nose. A bent steel rod creates a friendly smile. Add a burlap bow, a small decorative pumpkin, and a rustic wooden sign, and suddenly an old garden tool has a personality all its own.

This project works especially well during the fall season when pumpkins begin appearing on porches throughout the Upstate.

Meet the Table Rock Hiker

Every community needs an adventurer, and our Table Rock Hiker is ready for the trail.

Built from a green-painted leaf rake, this character wears a hiking hat and carries a miniature backpack complete with outdoor gear. The eyes are made from washers and bottle caps, while a metal funnel creates a distinctive nose. A walking stick and trail-themed sign complete the look.

Anyone who has tackled the Table Rock Trail will appreciate the sign proudly announcing “7.2 Miles to the Summit.” It serves as a reminder of one of the most iconic outdoor adventures in South Carolina.

Materials You Will Need

Most of the supplies can be found at home improvement stores, flea markets, thrift stores, or even in your own garage.

  • Old metal leaf rake
  • Spray paint
  • Large washers
  • Bottle caps
  • Small garden tools or metal pieces
  • Steel rod or heavy wire
  • Wooden sign
  • Screws, bolts, or epoxy
  • Decorative accessories
  • Wooden post or metal stake

Many builders enjoy using recycled materials because each character becomes completely unique.

Building Tips

Choose a sturdy metal rake rather than a plastic one. Metal rakes hold up better outdoors and provide a stronger base for attaching decorations.

Use exterior paint and a clear protective coating to help prevent rust and fading. If the character will remain outside year-round, consider using galvanized hardware whenever possible.

Most importantly, do not worry about perfection. The charm comes from the quirky expressions and handmade appearance.

Create Your Own Character

Once you build your first rake character, it becomes difficult to stop. The possibilities are nearly endless.

Imagine a Bigfoot character hiding in the flower bed, a fisherman holding a rod and reel, a Swamp Rabbit cyclist, or even a local coffee lover holding a cup from a favorite Upstate café.

Each one tells a story and adds personality to your yard.

Sometimes the best decorations are not purchased from a store. Sometimes they begin as an old garden rake waiting for a second life.
