A brilliant red Northern Cardinal stopped by the BirdBuddy feeder this week and seemed to pause for a moment to admire the view. In the distance sits Table Rock Mountain, making this one of the prettiest backyard bird photos we’ve captured so far.
The Northern Cardinal is one of the most recognizable birds in South Carolina. Males wear their famous bright red feathers year-round, while females have soft tan feathers with touches of red on their wings and tail. Both have the distinctive orange beak and pointed crest on top of their heads.
Fun Facts
- Cardinals don’t migrate. They’re here in the Upstate all year long.
- Both males and females sing, which is unusual among songbirds.
- Cardinals often mate for life and can frequently be seen feeding together.
- Their favorite foods include sunflower seeds, safflower seeds, cracked corn, and berries.
Can You Spot One?
Northern Cardinals are common throughout Pickens County and are often seen around:
- Bird feeders
- Woodland edges
- Shrubby backyards
- Parks and nature trails
Early morning and late evening are usually the best times to see them.
BirdBuddy’s View
One thing that makes this photo special isn’t just the bird. It’s the backdrop. While enjoying a snack, this cardinal had an incredible view of Table Rock Mountain, reminding us that sometimes the wildlife around us appreciates the scenery just as much as we do.
Hopefully he’ll be back soonโand maybe he’ll bring a few friends.
