Located in the heart of downtown Pickens, Pickens Doodle Park is one of the community’s most popular gathering places. Serving as the western trailhead of the Doodle Trail, the park combines local railroad history, outdoor recreation, and family-friendly attractions into one destination that appeals to visitors of all ages.
The park officially opened in 2019 and was designed as a gateway to the Doodle Trail, a 7.5-mile paved rail-trail connecting Pickens and Easley. The park features a train-themed playground, picnic areas, restrooms, bike racks, a covered pavilion, railroad exhibits, and direct access to one of the Upstate’s most popular walking and biking trails.
The History Behind the Name
The Doodle Trail traces the route of the historic Pickens Railway, often known locally as the “Pickens Doodle.”
The railroad was chartered in 1890 and began service between Easley and Pickens in 1898. For more than a century, trains carried textiles, food products, automobile parts, and other goods between the two communities. Local residents nicknamed the line the “Doodle” because the locomotive often had to travel backward on part of the route, making it resemble a doodlebug crawling along the tracks. The railway remained in operation until 2013, when it was transformed into the recreational trail enjoyed today.
