We see Lucy and Ricky.

Every morning, our backyard bird feeder comes to life with the sounds of chirping birds against one of the most beautiful backdrops in South Carolina. With Table Rock Mountain rising in the distance, dozens of birds stop by for breakfast, and before long, you begin to notice the regulars.

The first couple to capture our attention were two cheerful American Goldfinches. The bright yellow male, dressed in his summer colors, always seems to arrive alongside the more subtly colored female. They flutter from perch to perch, patiently cracking sunflower seeds and occasionally looking up to admire their mountain view.

Now, we know what the bird books say. We can’t truly know whether they’re a mated pair.

But around here, we’ve made up our minds.

They’re Lucy and Ricky.

If you watch them long enough, it’s hard not to believe they’re on a breakfast date. They seem comfortable together, never far apart, quietly enjoying their favorite seeds while the world wakes up around them. Maybe it’s just our imagination, or maybe there’s a little romance in the morning air over Pumpkintown.

Either way, they’ve become part of our daily routine.

Welcome to the Birds of Pumpkintown

Lucy and Ricky are just the beginning.

This new series will introduce the feathered visitors that call the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains home. From bold Tufted Titmice and upside-down White-breasted Nuthatches to colorful woodpeckers, curious bluebirds, and the occasional surprise guest, we’ll be sharing photos, videos, interesting facts, and the stories that unfold at our backyard feeder.

Unlike a traditional bird guide, this isn’t just about identifying species. It’s about getting to know the personalities that return day after day and celebrating the wildlife that makes this corner of South Carolina so special.

Some visitors may earn names.

Some may become local celebrities.

And every now and then, we’ll have an unexpected guest who steals the show.

Why We Started This Series

One of the best parts of living near Table Rock State Park is realizing that nature is always putting on a performance. You don’t have to hike miles into the mountains to enjoy it. Sometimes all it takes is a handful of sunflower seeds, a comfortable chair, and a little patience.

We hope these stories encourage you to slow down, fill your own bird feeder, and discover the incredible wildlife living right outside your window.
