Every fall, the mountains around Pumpkintown begin changing from summer green to shades of yellow, orange, and red. The transformation does not happen all at once. Color starts at the higher elevations of the Blue Ridge and slowly works its way down toward Table Rock and the foothills.
For 2026, the best estimate for peak fall color around Pumpkintown and Table Rock is October 28 through November 4, with Halloween weekend, October 31 and November 1, likely to be one of the best times to see it.
Of course, the mountains get the final say.

If you’re planning a fall trip to Pumpkintown, here’s the window we’re watching:
Early color: October 15–21
Good color: October 22–27
Best color: October 28–November 4
Our predicted peak: October 31, 2026
Late color: November 5–10
This prediction is based on the normal progression of fall color in the South Carolina mountains along with recent observations from the Table Rock area.
Weather can move peak color several days in either direction. Cool nights and sunny days usually help produce better color, while unusually warm weather can delay the change. Heavy rain and strong winds can also bring down colorful leaves early.
Why Pumpkintown Has Such a Long Fall Color Season
One of the best things about fall in the Pumpkintown area is the change in elevation.
Pumpkintown sits in the foothills while nearby Table Rock, Pinnacle Mountain, and Sassafras Mountain rise thousands of feet higher. That means fall color usually begins above us before gradually moving down the mountains.
In a typical year, Sassafras Mountain and the higher Blue Ridge elevations begin showing strong color first. The upper portions of Table Rock and Pinnacle Mountain follow. Finally, the color reaches the lower slopes, Pumpkintown and the surrounding foothills.
That elevation difference can create several weeks of good fall scenery instead of one short peak.
What Happened Last Year?
The 2025 fall reports from South Carolina State Parks give us a useful guide.
Around October 22, plenty of green remained around Table Rock. By October 29, park reports indicated that peak color was arriving. By November 5, the area was approaching the end of peak color.
That puts the heart of the 2025 season right around Halloween and the first few days of November.
Unless 2026 brings unusually warm, dry, wet, or windy weather, a similar timeframe is a reasonable starting point.
🍂 Where Will Color Peak First?
If you’re trying to catch as much color as possible, elevation matters.
Sassafras Mountain
South Carolina’s highest point should be one of the first nearby locations to develop strong fall color. Late October is normally a good target for the higher elevations.
The observation platform also provides an enormous view across the mountains, making it easy to see the progression of color across different elevations.
Table Rock State Park
Table Rock may be the best place to actually watch fall move down the mountains.
Early in the season, you may see colorful upper slopes while the forest around Lake Oolenoy remains mostly green. As peak approaches, color spreads downward until the entire mountainside is covered.
The view of Table Rock across Lake Oolenoy is particularly impressive during peak color.
Pumpkintown and the Foothills
Pumpkintown usually follows the higher mountains.
This is why the last few days of October and first few days of November are such a good bet. Higher elevations may still have plenty of color while the foothills are reaching their best.
Best Places to See Fall Color Near Pumpkintown
You don’t necessarily need a difficult hike to enjoy peak color.
Table Rock State Park offers some of the easiest views, especially around Lake Oolenoy and the park’s lower trails.
Sassafras Mountain provides huge long-distance views of the Blue Ridge with relatively little walking required to reach the overlook.
SC Highway 11 is another great option. The Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway passes directly through this part of the Upstate and offers mountain views throughout the drive.
For hikers, the Carrick Creek Trail, Table Rock Trail, and Pinnacle Mountain Trail provide very different perspectives depending on elevation.
When Should You Visit?
If you’re traveling specifically to see fall foliage, don’t worry about hitting one exact day.
The period from roughly October 25 through November 5 should provide excellent fall color somewhere around Pumpkintown, Table Rock, and the surrounding mountains.
But if you can choose only one weekend?

That’s our pick.
By then, color should have moved well down the mountains while enough leaves remain at higher elevations to create the layered red, orange, and yellow views that make this part of South Carolina spectacular in autumn.

Predicting fall color months ahead is never exact. September temperatures, rainfall, drought conditions, cold fronts, and October storms can all change the timing.
The good news is that Pumpkintown gives us a front-row seat.
