Motorists traveling through the Pumpkintown area should prepare for detours this summer as the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) begins repairs on the Pumpkintown Highway bridge over the Oolenoy River.
The bridge, located on SC Highway 8 (Pumpkintown Highway), will close beginning June 1, 2026, to allow crews to perform routine maintenance and safety improvements. According to SCDOT, the project is expected to continue through the end of the summer, weather permitting.
The repairs are part of an ongoing effort to maintain critical infrastructure and improve safety for residents and visitors traveling through the Oolenoy Valley.
Detour Information
During the closure, motorists will be directed around the work zone using several alternate routes:
- Highway 11 (Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway)
- Highway 178
- Moorefield Memorial Highway
- Main Street in Pickens
Drivers familiar with the area should expect increased traffic along these routes, particularly during morning and evening commuting hours.
What This Means for Pumpkintown Visitors
Visitors traveling between Pickens, Dacusville, Pumpkintown, and Table Rock State Park should plan for additional travel time throughout the summer months.
Local businesses, churches, farms, and attractions remain open during construction, but travelers are encouraged to review detour routes before heading into the area.

Safety Reminder
SCDOT asks all motorists to slow down, remain alert, and follow posted detour signs while traveling near the construction zone.
The bridge is currently expected to reopen by the end of the summer once repairs and safety upgrades are completed.
