Trail Rules at a Glance

Rules change from park to park. Here is what to know before you load up the dog, the bikes or the kids.

Bringing a dog
  • South Carolina state parks allow pets in most outdoor areas on a leash no longer than 6 feet.
  • DuPont State Forest, Pisgah National Forest, the Blue Ridge Parkway and North Carolina state parks require dogs on a leash.
  • Georgia state parks require a leash. Tallulah Gorge does not allow dogs on the Hurricane Falls Loop or the gorge floor.
  • Heritage Park in Simpsonville does not allow pets.

Pick Dog walks in Quick picks to see trails where leashed dogs are welcome. Bring water and bags, and watch paws on hot rock in summer.

Riding a bike
  • Paris Mountain trails open to bikes are closed to bikes on Saturdays.
  • Croft State Park has its own bike trails and separate horse trails, plus the Palmetto Trail.
  • Some Pisgah trails, such as Bennett Gap, North Slope and Pink Beds, are open to bikes only part of the year. The Forest Service lists October 15 to April 15 for Butter Gap and Coontree.
  • DuPont allows bikes on most forest roads and many trails. E-bikes are limited to Class 1 on designated accessible routes.
  • Greenways such as the Swamp Rabbit, Doodle, Mary Black, Ecusta and Brevard Greenway are paved or packed and easy to ride.
Park fees and reservations
  • Table Rock, Jones Gap and Paris Mountain charge $6 per adult. Oconee is $5, Croft is $3, and Devils Fork is $8. Caesars Head charges $3 for trail access.
  • Keowee-Toxaway and Oconee Station are free.
  • Jones Gap requires a parking reservation for guaranteed entry on weekends and holidays from 9 am to 1 pm.
  • Georgia state parks need a daily ParkPass or annual pass.
  • DuPont, Pisgah, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Gorges State Park and most city greenways have no entrance fee.

Child and senior rates are lower. Check the park page for current prices.

Hurricane Helene recovery in western North Carolina

Hurricane Helene damaged trails, forest roads and bridges across western North Carolina in 2024. Most popular areas have reopened, but closures still change. Check the official trail info on each card the week of your hike, and turn around at any closed sign.

How we check trail distances

Every full hike distance in this finder comes from the park, the forest or a published trail guide, and the source is linked on each card. A loop or round trip brings you back to your car. A one-way distance doubles if you return the same way. Cards marked as a trail section are pieces of a bigger network, and many of them link to the full hike they belong to.

Plan a Great Day on the Trail

A little preparation goes a long way in the Blue Ridge foothills. Start with daylight to spare and pack water, sturdy shoes, a trail map and a light layer. Rocky climbs, creek crossings and photo stops can make a short hike take longer than you expect.

Trail conditions and park rules change. Check the official trail info linked on each card before you go. For general preparation, see the National Park Service hiking safety guide.
