PUMPKINTOWNSC • HIKING & TRAILS

Find Your Next Favorite Trail

Some of the best hikes in Upstate South Carolina lead to waterfalls hidden deep in the woods. Others follow peaceful mountain streams, circle quiet lakes, or climb toward breathtaking Blue Ridge views. And while some adventures require hours of uphill effort, others offer just as much beauty after a short walk.

That’s why we’ve gathered 21 hiking routes featured on PumpkintownSC and given each two ratings: difficulty and scenery. Whether you’re planning a child’s first trail, a relaxing morning outdoors, or a challenging mountain summit, this guide will help you find a hike that fits your day.

How Our Effort & Wonder Ratings Work

A trail doesn’t have to be difficult to be spectacular. That’s the idea behind our Effort & Wonder Trail Rating System. Each hike receives two independent scores, from 1 to 5.

🥾 Trail Effort

1/5 — Very easy
2/5 — Easy
3/5 — Moderate
4/5 — Difficult
5/5 — Very difficult

🌄 Scenic Reward

1/5 — Low-key
2/5 — Pleasant
3/5 — Scenic
4/5 — Striking
5/5 — Spectacular

Trail Effort considers the full outing, including mileage, climbing, terrain, and the return trip. Scenic Reward considers waterfalls, mountain views, creeks, forests, rock formations, and the overall experience. These are our editorial ratings for the specific routes described, not official park classifications.

Very Easy Trails — Effort 1/5

Sometimes all you need is a short walk and some fresh air. These outings are ideal for an easy afternoon without steep mountain terrain.

Doodle Trail — Short Pickens Walk

🥾 Effort: 1/5 — Very Easy | 🌄 Scenery: 2/5 — Pleasant

Location: Pickens, SC
Selected distance: 1 mile out and back

The Doodle Trail follows a former railroad corridor between Pickens and Easley, offering a paved route through a mix of natural and community scenery. It’s a great place for an easy walk, especially if you want something without rocky footing or steep climbs. This score applies to a short Pickens-area outing rather than the entire greenway.

Easy Trails — Effort 2/5

Easy doesn’t mean boring. Some of the region’s most beautiful waterfalls and forest scenes are reachable on relatively manageable trails. Expect occasional roots, rocks, stairs, or gentle climbs, but nothing comparable to a full mountain summit.

Wildcat Wayside Trail — A Perfect First Hike

🥾 Effort: 2/5 — Easy | 🌄 Scenery: 4/5 — Striking

Location: Cleveland, SC
Distance: Approximately 0.8-mile loop

Wildcat Wayside is much more than the waterfall you can see from Highway 11. Beyond the roadside stop, a short woodland trail follows the creek through rhododendron, mountain laurel, and shaded forest. Along the way, you’ll find steps, natural rock features, and the simple pleasure of being surrounded by the sounds of moving water.

We’ve walked this trail many times, and it holds a special place in our family memories because it was our daughter’s very first trail. It’s the kind of hike that lets children discover what makes exploring the woods so exciting, without requiring an exhausting climb. The full trail is easy and approachable, although visitors should remain on designated paths and avoid hazardous or closed areas near the upper falls.

Twin Falls — Reedy Cove

🥾 Effort: 2/5 — Easy | 🌄 Scenery: 5/5 — Spectacular

Location: Sunset, SC
Distance: Approximately 0.5 miles round trip

Few hikes offer such a dramatic destination for so little walking. A short wooded trail leads to the remarkable sight of water spilling down the mountainside. Twin Falls is one of our best examples of a five-star scenic reward without an exhausting mountain climb. Watch for slippery footing near the viewing area.

Eastatoe Passage — Suspension Bridge Outing

🥾 Effort: 2/5 — Easy | 🌄 Scenery: 4/5 — Striking

Location: Eastatoe area, Pickens County

The Eastatoe Passage is part of the larger Palmetto Trail, but this rating focuses on the shorter suspension bridge outing featured in our article. The bridge adds a memorable sense of adventure to a beautiful woodland walk, making it an appealing choice for hikers who want scenic trails without committing to an entire long-distance passage.

Lakeside Trail — Table Rock State Park

🥾 Effort: 2/5 — Easy | 🌄 Scenery: 4/5 — Striking

Distance: Approximately 1.9-mile loop

You don’t have to climb Table Rock to enjoy some of its finest scenery. The Lakeside Trail passes through peaceful forest beside the water, with opportunities to admire the mountains from below. Its rolling terrain makes it a little more involved than a level park path, but the mountain-and-lake combination is wonderfully rewarding.

Station Cove Falls

🥾 Effort: 2/5 — Easy | 🌄 Scenery: 4/5 — Striking

Location: Oconee County
Distance: Approximately 1 mile round trip using the shorter approach

A short woodland walk leads to an attractive stepped waterfall framed by the foothill forest. Station Cove Falls is particularly appealing to people who want the reward of a waterfall hike without a long climb. This rating applies to the shorter access route, not a longer hike from Oconee Station.

Clemson Experimental Forest — Blue Trail Loop

🥾 Effort: 2/5 — Easy | 🌄 Scenery: 3/5 — Scenic

Location: Clemson, SC

The Clemson Experimental Forest offers a different hiking experience than the steep mountain trails farther north. Its peaceful woodland setting and marked paths make it a wonderful place to enjoy the forest at a comfortable pace. This rating applies to the Blue Trail route featured in our firsthand hiking article, not every route in the forest.

Lake Placid Trail — Paris Mountain

🥾 Effort: 2/5 — Easy | 🌄 Scenery: 3/5 — Scenic

Location: Greenville, SC
Distance: Approximately 0.75-mile loop

This peaceful lake loop is one of the shorter ways to enjoy Paris Mountain State Park. Forest scenery, water views, and a pleasant natural setting make it an inviting outing. The short climb near the dam and uneven surfaces give it a little more character than a flat sidewalk walk.

Explore Lake Placid Trail →

Oconee Bell Nature Trail

🥾 Effort: 2/5 — Easy | 🌄 Scenery: 3/5 — Scenic

Location: Devils Fork State Park
Distance: Approximately 1.5-mile loop

This wooded nature trail is particularly special in early spring, when the rare Oconee bell flowers bloom near the forest floor. It’s a great choice for hikers who appreciate wildflowers, quiet woods, and small natural details over dramatic summit views.

Todd Creek Falls

🥾 Effort: 2/5 — Easy | 🌄 Scenery: 3/5 — Scenic

Location: Central, SC
Distance: Approximately 0.6 miles round trip from the shorter approach

A short waterfall hike can make a wonderful afternoon adventure. Todd Creek Falls offers an appealing combination of forest and moving water, though the footing near the falls can be uneven and slippery. This rating is for the shorter Brookbend Road approach.

Explore Todd Creek Falls →

Moderate Trails — Effort 3/5

Moderate hikes usually introduce more climbing, uneven terrain, or longer distances. These routes are a good next step for hikers who have grown comfortable with shorter woodland trails and want to explore farther.

Glassy Mountain

🥾 Effort: 3/5 — Moderate | 🌄 Scenery: 5/5 — Spectacular

Location: Near Pickens, SC

Glassy Mountain proves that a relatively short hike can still deliver a remarkable view. Steep grades, roots, and exposed granite add challenge, but the wide-open foothill scenery delivers an impressive reward. Choose the correct preserve trailhead and stay on designated public access routes.

Carrick Creek Trail — Full Loop

🥾 Effort: 3/5 — Moderate | 🌄 Scenery: 4/5 — Striking

Location: Table Rock State Park
Distance: Approximately 2-mile loop

Carrick Creek combines beautiful creek scenery, cascades, moss-covered rocks, and mountain forest into one memorable outing. The full loop includes climbing and uneven terrain, making it more demanding than the easier lower creek sections. It’s one of the park’s most appealing choices when you want plenty to see without committing to a summit.

Jones Gap Falls

🥾 Effort: 3/5 — Moderate | 🌄 Scenery: 4/5 — Striking

Location: Jones Gap State Park
Distance: Approximately 2.6 miles round trip

Following the Middle Saluda River into the mountains is a rewarding experience. The trail passes through rugged woodland scenery before reaching Jones Gap Falls. Roots, rocks, and uneven surfaces require attention, even though the overall distance is manageable for many hikers.

Explore Jones Gap Falls →

Natural Bridge Nature Trail

🥾 Effort: 3/5 — Moderate | 🌄 Scenery: 4/5 — Striking

Location: Keowee-Toxaway State Park
Distance: Approximately 1.3–1.5-mile loop

This trail offers impressive natural variety in a relatively short distance. Poe Creek, small waterfalls, woodland scenery, and unusual rock formations create an engaging hike. Steep and rocky sections give the route its moderate rating despite its modest mileage.

Rocky Bald Loop — Nine Times

🥾 Effort: 3/5 — Moderate | 🌄 Scenery: 3/5 — Scenic

Location: Nine Times Forest, Pickens County

Nine Times is one of Pickens County’s most interesting protected landscapes, with quiet forests and mountain terrain that feels removed from the busier state parks. Rocky Bald offers a more rugged woodland outing with elevation changes. Consult the land-manager map to confirm your exact route and current access.

Explore Nine Times →

Difficult Trails — Effort 4/5

These hikes involve steeper climbs, rougher terrain, or a combination of distance and elevation gain. They are rewarding adventures, but preparation, sturdy footwear, water, and enough daylight become especially important.

Rainbow Falls — Jones Gap

🥾 Effort: 4/5 — Difficult | 🌄 Scenery: 5/5 — Spectacular

Location: Jones Gap State Park

Rainbow Falls is one of Upstate South Carolina’s most impressive waterfall destinations, but it takes real effort to reach. The trail climbs steeply through mountain forest before arriving at the dramatic waterfall. The elevation gain, rugged footing, and spectacular scenery make it a memorable challenge.

Explore Rainbow Falls →

Stool Mountain — Summit Route

🥾 Effort: 4/5 — Difficult | 🌄 Scenery: 5/5 — Spectacular

Location: Table Rock State Park
Distance: Approximately 5.4 miles round trip

Stool Mountain rewards hikers with beautiful woodland scenery, towering boulders, and memorable views toward Table Rock and the reservoir. Much of the trail feels comfortable underfoot, especially where the path is wide and well marked, but the sustained uphill climb adds up over the hike.

Along the way, watch for giant rocks that seem to rise right out of the forest, seasonal wildflowers, and other natural features that make the walk as enjoyable as the destination. Our own hike reinforced how pleasant this route can feel, even with the considerable elevation gain.

Hospital Rock — Rock Shelter Outing

🥾 Effort: 4/5 — Difficult | 🌄 Scenery: 4/5 — Striking

Location: Jones Gap State Park, Marietta, SC
Route: Jones Gap parking lot to Hospital Rock and back
Our hiking time: 1 hour, 47 minutes, including stops

Hospital Rock combines a mountain climb with one of Jones Gap’s most intriguing natural features: an enormous rock overhang with a broad, cave-like shelter beneath it. On our October 23 visit, the trail was mostly uphill on the way out and downhill on the way back. Stone steps, roots, boulders, and narrow stretches beside a steep hillside made parts of the walk more demanding than a simple woodland stroll.

The scenery gave us plenty of reasons to pause. Oversized boulders, small watercourses, layered rock formations, and an unexpected opening over wooded mountain ridges made the journey memorable. The shelter itself was the highlight. Local legend connects it with Confederate deserters, although stories describing an actual Civil War hospital remain unconfirmed.

This rating applies to our shorter out-and-back visit to the rock shelter. The full Hospital Rock Trail continues much farther into demanding mountain terrain. Our hiking time includes stops, and we did not record a GPS distance for this outing. See the full article for the route details before planning your visit.

Explore Hospital Rock →

Sulphur Springs Trail — Full Loop

🥾 Effort: 4/5 — Difficult | 🌄 Scenery: 3/5 — Scenic

Location: Paris Mountain State Park
Distance: Approximately 3.8-mile loop

Sulphur Springs combines rocky trail sections, notable elevation changes, forest scenery, and a little local history. The historic valve house and Mountain Lake make for interesting stops, while the terrain makes it more physically demanding than the park’s shorter lakeside routes.

Explore Sulphur Springs →

Very Difficult Trails — Effort 5/5

These mountain hikes demand time, endurance, and preparation. Their routes climb through rugged terrain toward some of the most memorable high-elevation landscapes in the South Carolina Upstate.

Pinnacle Mountain — Summit Route

🥾 Effort: 5/5 — Very Difficult | 🌄 Scenery: 5/5 — Spectacular

Location: Table Rock State Park
Distance: Approximately 8.4 miles round trip

Pinnacle Mountain is a long, demanding climb, but the best parts of the hike aren’t limited to the summit. Mountain forests, changing terrain, interesting rock formations, and views across the foothills make the journey itself memorable. This outing is for hikers ready for a full day in the mountains.

Table Rock Mountain — Summit Route

🥾 Effort: 5/5 — Very Difficult | 🌄 Scenery: 5/5 — Spectacular

Location: Table Rock State Park
Distance: Approximately 7.2 miles round trip

Pickens County’s signature mountain hike is also one of its most challenging. A sustained climb over rugged terrain eventually rewards hikers with magnificent views of the Blue Ridge foothills. Table Rock is an unforgettable destination, but the full summit route deserves respect for both its length and elevation gain.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the easiest waterfall hike in Upstate South Carolina?

Twin Falls, Wildcat Wayside, and the shorter Station Cove Falls approach are excellent starting points. Each offers an attractive waterfall experience without the substantial climbing many mountain trails require.

Does a higher scenery rating mean a harder hike?

Not at all. Our system deliberately separates difficulty from scenery. A short hike to an impressive waterfall can earn a 5/5 Scenic Reward while receiving only a 2/5 Trail Effort rating.

Are these official state park difficulty ratings?

No. These are PumpkintownSC editorial ratings created to help readers compare the specific routes described. Always consult official trail maps and current park guidance when planning a hike.

Are easy trails suitable for young children?

Many can be wonderful family hikes, but an easy rating doesn’t guarantee a trail is appropriate for every child. Consider the child’s age and experience, natural hazards, elevation changes, and weather. Wildcat Wayside was our daughter’s first trail and remains one of our favorite examples of a rewarding beginner hike.

Before You Hit the Trail

Even familiar trails can change with the seasons. Rain can make rocks and roots slippery, summer heat can make an easy walk more tiring, and fallen trees or maintenance work can temporarily change access. Check current park conditions, carry water, wear suitable footwear, and leave enough time to finish comfortably.

Most importantly, choose a trail that matches the experience you want. Some days call for a quiet walk beside a creek. Others are meant for climbing a mountain. The Upstate has room for both.
