If you are looking for one of the most spectacular views in the South Carolina Upstate without hiking a single mile, Grant Meadow Overlook deserves a place on your list.
Located along the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway (SC Highway 11) just outside Table Rock State Park, this scenic pull-off offers a breathtaking view of Table Rock Mountain rising above the Oolenoy Valley. With convenient parking, benches, and a historical marker, it is one of the easiest places to experience the beauty of the Blue Ridge Escarpment.
How to Get There
Grant Meadow Overlook is located on SC Highway 11 approximately one-half mile east of the entrance to Table Rock State Park.
From Pickens:
- Take SC Highway 11 west toward Table Rock.
- Pass the main entrance to Table Rock State Park.
- Continue east on Highway 11 for less than a mile.
- The overlook will be on the south side of the road.
The overlook features a paved parking area with several parking spaces, making it easy to stop safely and enjoy the view. Unlike many scenic pull-offs, visitors can get out of their vehicles, walk to the viewing area, relax on the benches, and take photographs without standing along the highway.
A View Worth Preserving
The overlook takes its name from Grant Meadow, the open pasture stretching across the valley below Table Rock.
For generations, travelers along Highway 11 have stopped to admire this iconic view. The meadow itself has been owned and maintained by the Grant family for decades and remains one of the most recognizable landscapes in Pickens County.
In 2013, much of the property was placed under a conservation easement to protect the view from future development. Additional acreage was later protected to ensure that future generations would continue to enjoy the unobstructed sight of Table Rock rising above the meadow. Today, the property remains an active hay meadow and one of the most photographed scenes in South Carolina.
The Overlook’s History
While people had been stopping here for years to take pictures, there was no official place to pull over safely. Visitors often parked along Highway 11 or stopped in the roadway to capture photographs of Table Rock.
Recognizing both the popularity and safety concerns of the location, Pickens County partnered with local organizations to create the overlook. The scenic pull-off officially opened in 2022 and includes parking, benches, landscaping, and a South Carolina historical marker detailing the history of Table Rock Mountain.
The Historical Marker
One of the highlights of the overlook is the Table Rock historical marker located beside the viewing area.
The marker tells the story of Table Rock’s Cherokee heritage, early explorations, the famous Table Rock Hotel, and the creation of Table Rock State Park by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1930s. It serves as a quick introduction to the mountain’s rich history and helps visitors appreciate the significance of the landscape before them.
