Electric vehicles are becoming a common sight on South Carolina’s mountain roads, and fortunately, many of the Upstate’s most popular hiking destinations are now within easy reach of public charging stations.

Whether you drive a Rivian, Tesla, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq, Kia EV6, Chevrolet Equinox EV, or another electric vehicle, it is easier than ever to spend a day exploring the mountains while keeping your battery topped off.

Table Rock State Park

Located just outside Pumpkintown, Table Rock State Park is one of the best EV-friendly hiking destinations in the Upstate.

The park features two Rivian Waypoint charging stations near the visitor area, allowing visitors to charge while exploring the park’s trails.

Popular hikes include:

  • Table Rock Trail
  • Carrick Creek Falls Trail
  • Pinnacle Mountain Trail
  • Lakeside Trail

Because many visitors spend several hours hiking, Table Rock is one of the few places where charging and outdoor recreation work together perfectly. You can leave your vehicle plugged in and return with additional range after your adventure.

Devils Fork State Park

Located on the shores of Lake Jocassee, Devils Fork State Park offers scenic hiking opportunities along one of South Carolina’s most beautiful lakes.

Nearby charging options make it possible for EV drivers to enjoy:

  • Oconee Bell Nature Trail
  • Lake Jocassee shoreline walks
  • Short nature trails around the park

The combination of mountain scenery, lake views, and nearby charging infrastructure makes Devils Fork one of the best EV destinations in the region.

Paris Mountain State Park

Just outside Greenville, Paris Mountain State Park offers more than 15 miles of hiking trails and multiple nearby charging locations.

Popular hikes include:

  • Sulfur Springs Trail
  • Mountain Creek Trail
  • North Lake Trail
  • Fire Tower Trail

Because Greenville has one of the largest concentrations of public chargers in the Upstate, EV owners can easily charge before or after a hike.

Jones Gap State Park

Jones Gap State Park does not currently offer on-site charging, but several charging options are available nearby in Travelers Rest and northern Greenville County.

Visitors can charge before heading to the trailhead and enjoy:

  • Jones Gap Trail
  • Rainbow Falls Trail
  • Middle Saluda River Trail
  • Connections into the Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area

Coming Soon: Caesars Head State Park

Caesars Head State Park is expected to become an even more EV-friendly destination.

Charging infrastructure has been planned for the area, making this one of the most anticipated additions for EV owners who enjoy mountain hiking.

When available, hikers visiting Caesars Head will have convenient access to:

  • Raven Cliff Falls Trail
  • Dismal Trail
  • Caesars Head Overlook
  • Mountain Bridge Wilderness trails

For now, visitors should plan to charge in Travelers Rest, Greenville, or Pickens before heading to the park.

Planning an EV Hiking Adventure

A little planning goes a long way when exploring the mountains in an electric vehicle.

Many Upstate hikes require several hours on the trail, making them ideal opportunities to recharge while you explore. Destinations such as Table Rock State Park already offer the convenience of charging at the park, while others have stations only a short drive away.

As EV infrastructure continues to expand across South Carolina, the mountains of Pickens, Greenville, and Oconee counties are becoming increasingly accessible to electric vehicle owners.

The days of worrying whether your EV can make it to the trailhead are quickly becoming a thing of the past. Stations are within an hour or two of Pumpkintown, making it possible to spend a day on the trails and still be home in time for supper.
